Differences that I notice between Spanish/English.
If you want me to translate all the posts to Spanish, tell me. German maybe in the future.
My mother tongue is Spanish, but I have learned English since I was three. So I realized that there are lots of differences between those languages, but also things in common that makes learning it easier. In this delivery of my newsletter I’ll talk you about the five principal differences that have Spanish and English.
Spanish-English:
⇒Pronunciation, in Spanish we write as it sound, but in English this doesn’t happen. That’s because in English they have many different sounds and the seedlings letters. For example: chocolate (we don’t say -e), comfortable (we don’t say -r- or -e), vegetable (we don’t say the second and last e).
⇒Determinants, in Spanish determinants (not sure if it is said like that) tell us the gender of the noun, which are: lo, la, los, las, un, una, unos, unas. At English it’s used “the” and “a”, they don’t say the gender but they are a lot less.
⇒In English the adjective goes before the noun, it’s easier to understand with examples.
I like big houses. = Me gustan las casas (noun) grandes (adjective).
The red car. = El coche (noun) rojo (adjective).
The movie is interesting. = La película (noun) es interesante (adjective).
⇒Conjugating verbs, in both English and Spanish, we must first think about whether the action happens, in the past, present or future, right? In the case of Spanish we must contemplate many more variables, which gives a much greater number of possibilities. For example the verb work:
Work, works, worked, working.
Trabajo, trabajas, trabaja, trabajamos, trabajan, trabajaron, trabajado, trabajaba, trabajábamos, trabajaban, trabajé, trabajaste, trabajó, trabajaré, trabajarás, trabajará, trabajarán, trabajaremos, trabajaría, trabajarías, trabajaríamos, trabajarían…
⇒Exclamation and interrogation signs, at English it’s only necessary at the end. At Spanish you must put it at the beginning and at the end.
